Definition

A kill in volleyball is an attack that directly wins the rally — the ball lands in-bounds on the opponent's court, or the defence commits an error attempting to play it. Kills are the primary offensive statistic and form the numerator in hitting efficiency.

What counts as a kill?

A kill is awarded when an attack results in an immediate point. Three situations count:

  • The ball lands in-bounds on the opponent's side of the net
  • The ball hits the floor after the defence touches it but cannot control it (the attacker still gets the kill)
  • The receiving team commits a handling error (double contact, lift, out) directly caused by the attack

A kill is not awarded if the defence digs the ball and keeps it in play, even if the team eventually wins the point.

Competitive club3–630–40%

Kill % = Kills ÷ Total Attempts × 100. Not the same as hitting efficiency (which subtracts errors).

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a kill in volleyball?

A kill is any attack that directly wins the rally — the ball lands in-bounds, hits the floor, or the defence commits an error (out, caught, double) attempting to play it. The attacker must have initiated the attack for it to count as a kill.

What is a good kills per set stat in volleyball?

For recreational leagues, 3–5 kills per set is solid. Competitive club players typically average 4–6. Collegiate outside hitters often average 4–8 per set depending on tempo and system.

Is a kill the same as an ace?

No. A kill comes from an attack (spike or tip) after the ball has been set. An ace is a serve that directly wins the point. Both result in a point but are recorded as separate stats.
